A general overview of the webinar:
Indigenous lands in interior British Columbia (BC), Canada, are facing increasingly severe, fast-moving wildfires due to climate change and two centuries of settler-colonial land management, which has led to more vegetation (fuels). Despite disruptions from colonial laws and policies, Stswecem'c Xget'tem First Nation (SXFN) has stewarded their Traditional Territory in south-central BC since time immemorial, including through the regular use of surface fire. Over the past two decades, SXFN communities have been repeatedly threatened by wildfires, prompting a 2021 partnership with the University of British Columbia to assess crown fire risk in their wildland-urban interface and explore forest stewardship solutions.
